A dog is dead and a man is behind bars on arson charges after he allegedly set fire to a home where his mother lives.
Mark Herrera, 38, is charged with the crime, which police say he tried lying about before security footage caught him in the act.
The victim says she was not home at the time because Herrera had been making threats toward family members who live there and his violent history.
She also told police she got a notification the morning of the fire from her front door alarm system so came to check out what was happening.
According to court records, the woman said she thinks her son lit the fire because of past threats.
Then, Herrera came out from his home across the street and began to argue with family members in the street. Police say they detained him and took him in for an interview.
During the interview, police say Herrera claimed he had nothing to do with the fire and said he was upset they did not tell him about his 14-year-old daughter’s recent death.
However, video footage from a nearby security camera caught Herrera walking into the home before the fire started and quickly leaving two minutes later, with smoke showing from inside.
We had a crew at the fire the morning of, who was told a dog stuck inside a room of the home actually ended up dying from smoke inhalation.
